It’s amazing how a neighborhood goes to sleep during the winter and literally comes alive the moment the chill disappears. The temperature was 52 degrees yesterday and I took my youngest daughter out for a walk. We passed three neighbors all at different stages of their lives. A young couple pushing their five-month old in a stroller, an older neighbor using a walker, and a mid-aged woman walking her dog. Then there was me, chasing after and picking up my rambunctious toddler. It occurred to me that not only were all of us getting exercise by walking, but we were all doing various forms of resistance training. Whether we realized it or not, pushing a stroller, pulling a dog, leaning body weight on a walker or bending and lifting a child are all resistance exercises. Having an outside force create a more difficult workout is what resistance training is all about and the actions we do in our everyday lives can contribute to our overall strength. So get out and walk and bring along a baby or a dog. They can be very useful workout tools.
