Which is better, Pilates or Yoga? Ok, that’s an enormous question with many answers, but the easy answer is: they are both different and great. Yoga is the older of the two dating back thousands of years. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900′s. Though both have similar quests, the approaches are very different. Pilates is somewhat calisthenic using both movement and stability exercises to achieve overall greater strength.
Pilates increases flexibility, body awareness, and core strength using special machines designed by Joseph Pilates. There are Pilates exercises done on Pilates mats, using Pilates rings, assorted barrels and big equipment like the Reformer and Cadillac.
Yoga uses mostly Yoga mats and smaller accessories like a Yoga block, a Yoga blanket and Yoga straps. Yoga achieves strength by holding poses and slowly passing through them. Which ever you choose, you will benefit from both. The most important thing is to find a qualified instructor to show you the ins and outs of these two wonderful forms of exercise.
