Exercise In Resistance Training - Shoveling Snow

Shoveling snow is great resistance training. Think about it: Pushing against an outside force, creating resistance in the movement, lifting a heavy load while maintaining stability, and the use of multiple muscle groups. Sounds like a workout to me! Don’t have any snow where you live to work on some resistance training? A resistance band can recreate the same force.

Resistance bands, like a theraband or non-latex flexband, are typically a long and flat featherlight piece of rubber in various strengths. They were originally designed for rehab situations, but are now a staple in the fitness industry. Rubber tubing, like an Xertube, has also become a common sight in any training facility. These typically have handles on the ends for better grip and so they can better mimic free weight exercises.

FITNESS TIPS: Any rubber resistance tool offers a gradual increase in tension as you pull on them and because the movements are more controlled, rubber resistance is easy on the joints. Give them a try and add a little resistance training to your workout!
