Improve Golf Swing - What You Need To Know
I’ve had many clients come through my door who ask for very specific training. They’re either horseback riders, runners, or tennis enthusiasts and they are looking to better their game or take care of sports related injuries.
But the number one request I get for sports specific training is for golfers to improve their golf swing.
Golf has become a more competitive sport, meaning the pros don’t just show up and play. They train the same way baseball and football players train. They want longer drives, more power, better rotational strength and fewer over use injuries.
There are many core strengthening exercises that can help to improve a golf swing. Since rotation is the most used movement in a golf swing, one needs to look at the muscles used in rotation in order to choose the correct exercises. The oblique muscles are responsible for rotation and lateral flexion, so any exercise that works the obliques in addition to all abdominal muscles will be functional exercises for golf.
Try oblique crunches on a burst resistant stability ball or a streamline BOSU sport trainer for both balance and strength. Practicing your swing while standing on an adjustable based wobble board or a half foam roller alignment tool is also a great functional workout.
Increasing your core strength and in particular, your rotational strength, will help improve your golf swing and with it your golf game.
FITNESS TIPS: Don’t forget to stretch! A golfer needs mobility in their spine, hips, knees and shoulders. Pretty much everywhere! A buckled yoga strap is a great portable tool to assist in stretching you out.
