Medicine Balls - Something Old Is New Again In Strength Training

Everything old is new again. In fitness, that’s true when talking about the dusty, old fashioned, tenacious medicine ball. This thing just won’t go away. And good thing too. It’s a fabulous piece of equipment that got it’s start 3000 years ago when Persian wrestlers tossed around sand filled bags to increase their conditioning.

Since medicine balls, not to be confused with swiss or stability balls, come in weights ranging from 5 to 25 pounds or more, anyone can use them and reap the benefits of greater strength. Athletes use them in plyometric training to achieve greater explosive power, but you can use them for squats, ab curls, lifting the weighted ball for arm strength and overall resistance. They are also used for rehab situations. Though weighted medicine balls may seem to be an aging thing of the past, they are definitely a wave of the future. The fitness industry knows a good thing when they see it.

FITNESS TIPS: Unsure of how to properly use your medicine ball? A session with a certified personal trainer will show you proper strength training exercises and the correct way to perform them.
