It’s a new year and it’s time to take a look at the top five fitness trends that will be talked about in the coming year. There are some familiar subjects and a few new ones. Counting down from five, the top five fitness trends for 2010:
5. Functional Training
Building functional strength continues to be a trend to watch. Any exercise that mimics every day movements and uses more than one muscle group at a time keeps this trend coming back this year. Balance products are a great way to challenge functional strength. Use a BOSU or balance pods with compound exercises like squats, lunges or with moves like step-ups with dumbbell shoulder presses to complete your workout.
4. Budget Friendly Workouts
The recession may be waning, but most people are still feeling the need for affordable exercise. At-home workouts with small equipment or a workout DVD are just the ticket for saving some bucks. Workout arenas like gyms and Pilates studios, are offering affordable rates, more group classes and incentives like “buy one get one free” to entice their clients to stay on during tough economic times.
3. Time Friendly Workouts
The number one reason people give for not exercising more is that they can’t find the time. Fitting in quality workouts into a busy schedule can be challenging, but not impossible. A focus on shorter length workouts will be big in 2010 so even the busiest of exercisers can be fit in less time. Equipment that can pull double duty and travel easily are good choices for saving time. Resistance bands or exercise tubing adds resistance for both leg and arm exercises and can pack away easily for an anytime and anywhere workout.
2. Specialty Group Classes
Did you Zumba in 2009? Did you try a Pole workout? Specialty workouts will continue to seduce us into getting fit, but it’s hard to predict exactly where the trend will go. Working out in a group can inspire and push you harder and having it be fun and new is an even bigger draw. Look for even more new and innovative classes to appear on health club schedules. Make sure you are outfitted right with a Yoga mat bag and personal mat.
1. Exergames or Wii-kouts
Wii and computer driven games will continue to explode in 2010. And why not? It combines our love of video games with a (sometimes) great workout. Don’t let it replace your formal workouts, but get moving and have fun!
So keep an eye out for these and other fitness trends in 2010. It’s a new decade and new workouts, equipment, classes and ideas will be popping up all the time.
